Over the time Darlene had been cleaning the mortuary it had truly become a family affair. As she cleaned, the kids would play with their toys in the office or watch a video she had brought in with her. As time passed, the boys had become brave enough, and eventually dared each other to look at bodies in caskets. Unbeknownst to Darlene, they went from viewing room to viewing room and pushed each other up close to the caskets, trying to scare each other. They would then come running back to where Darlene was cleaning, scared, curious, out of breath, and wondering even more. At times when Darlene and the children arrived to clean the mortuary, the viewing rooms were filled with the newly dearly departed. The next time they returned, they were all gone and a brand new group of departed had moved in. Jordan had made up his mind that his Daddy “sent people to heaven and helped people remember them.” That sounded much better to John and Darlene than his comments about John taking people’s eyeballs out. That was not going over well with the teachers at his school, some of his peers, and some of their parents. “Sending people to heaven” was beautiful—who could complain about that?

The children encircled John roundabout as Darlene sat on the cot next to them. “Daddy is helping a family right now. A lady is going to heaven.”

Ashton grabbed John’s face with his little hands,. “Can I see her, Daddy?”

John smiled, “Not tonight, buddy. Daddy will take good care of her. I will need to stay here tonight to make sure.”

Ashton interrupted him, “You’re going to help her get back to Heavenly Father, right Daddy? Make sure she finds her way?”

“Yeah, that’s right Ashton.” He looked at all three children, who had been mesmerized by the conversation. They all hugged John tightly as Darlene looked on. John stood up and looked at each of their precious faces, “Now, you guys be good for Mommy tonight and go right to bed when she tells you to, okay?” They all promised.

Darlene busily laid out blankets over the cot and placed John’s pillow on it. She placed a plate of food on the desk with a cup of steaming hot chocolate.

“Perfect,” John said as he smiled at Darlene. He mouthed the words, “I love you.”

They all knelt in the office and had their nighttime family prayer, then John walked them over to the office door, kissing each child as they walked to the car. He held Darlene tightly and gave her a prolonged goodnight kiss. Soon the family drove off into the night, leaving John alone with Mr. Hylton.

It was a bit uncomfortable as he pondered whether he should try to sleep or stay awake, read a book, or watch something on TV. What if Mr. Hylton needed him? Even worse, what if he wanted to do this again tomorrow night after the public viewing ended? He would need some sleep to function throughout the day.
